When you hear the phrase “employee recognition,” do you imagine a name engraved on an “Employee of the Month” plaque? There are many more — and more effective — ways to appreciate staff members for their hard work, and they don’t have to take much time or cost a lot of money.
The pandemic has made the past year particularly challenging and at times, stressful, for co-op employees. Every day we see co-op staff go above and beyond to prepare delicious food in the deli, stock grocery shelves, clean the coolers, help a customer find just the right spices, offer a sample of a new product, carry a customer’s bags to their car and so many more examples that help to make someone’s day better. Despite our best intentions, it can be easy to forget to say thank you for all that employees do. During the busiest and most stressful times of year, like the holiday season, it’s especially important for managers to acknowledge that team members have put in extra time and effort, and to show appreciation for their contributions to the co-op’s success.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of taking time to celebrate success is the positive influence it has on employee engagement. Being shown gratitude — as an individual, as a member of a department and as part of the entire co-op staff — makes employees feel valued. It also improves staff morale and encourages teamwork. And when employees are happy, they are more likely to make sure customers are happy.
Take Time to Appreciate Individuals
Expressing appreciation one-on-one involves more than simply saying “good job” or “you’re doing great.” A specific and sincere hand-written note has a greater benefit; telling someone in person that their actions have made a positive impact is more meaningful as well.
One way to provide employee recognition more publicly among co-op staff is to share positive feedback from customer comment cards during meetings, in the staff newsletter, or displayed in the breakroom. Employees who are acknowledged on comment cards can be entered to win a prize, such as a $10 co-op gift card or free lunch in the co-op deli. Acknowledging service anniversaries (perhaps with a similar gift of nominal value) is an opportunity to thank individuals for their ongoing hard work and dedication to the co-op.
Find Ways to Appreciate Groups
When you want to celebrate operational or department successes, look for small and large accomplishments to rally around. You could recognize peak sales days, achieving department goals, or reaching a certain number of new owner signups. Think about setting achievable, short-term goals for one day or even one shift — and when you hit that mark, have a team huddle to celebrate. Carry the good news forward with a congratulatory sign on the staff bulletin board or print an announcement in your staff newsletter to let the entire co-op know. Want to provide something more tangible to recognize an extraordinary achievement? Buy everyone a cup of coffee or tea, buy lunch for the entire team, or give each person a co-op gift card.
Consider Personal Preferences
Keep in mind that each individual has different needs when it comes to recognition. Some people enjoy receiving public accolades while others would much rather be thanked with a note or in a personal conversation. Encourage managers to ask their employees during new-hire onboarding or in a check-in meeting how they prefer to be recognized.
Be Authentic
No matter the form or setting, the appreciation you’re giving must be sincere. Never underestimate the power of a simple “thank you” — genuine, authentic gratitude is always meaningful. Take a moment today to express your appreciation for a coworker and celebrate the success you have achieved together at the co-op.
