Serving the Community During a Pandemic

Co-ops exist to meet the needs of the communities they serve, but what happens when those needs change suddenly and dramatically with a pandemic? Co-ops respond quickly by listening to their shoppers, owners and staff and by taking quick, decisive action — sometimes making very difficult decisions. Here are a few examples of co-ops rising to these challenging circumstances:

  • Harmony Natural Foods Co-op started a “grocery buddy” program for those who are highly vulnerable to COVID-19. Shoppers who need this service (not for convenience, for actual need) can call in orders and have a buddy pick up their groceries.
  • The Co-op Natural Foods (Sioux Falls) waived all delivery and curbside pickup fees to reduce any financial barriers to social distancing.
  • BriarPatch Food Co-op secured pallets of bulk bags of rice, beans and other dry goods to help shoppers stock up.
  • GreenTree Cooperative Grocery narrowed the focus of the prepared foods department to grab and go burritos and sandwiches, adapting to fewer staff and restrictions on restaurant service.
  • Just Food Co-op used social media to recognize staff and to ask for patience and staff appreciation (no high fives, please!).
  • New Pioneer Food Co-op reserved the first hour after opening (and cleaning) for seniors or those who are especially vulnerable to COVID-19.
  • Davis Food Co-op adjusted their usual product policy to offer non-organic produce (when needed) to meet demand for fresh produce.
  • Grain Train Natural Foods Market is offering after-hours shifts for staff who are unable to work during open hours due to childcare or health concerns.
  • Mariposa Food Co-op has opened a PTO donation pool for staff to donate their unused PTO. Staff in need can request to use this PTO.

While not all of these changes are appropriate (or possible) for all co-ops, they show a dedication to serving the community and continually adapting to changing needs. It’s tough to be a grocer in a pandemic, but co-ops are rising to the occasion.

The 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak continues to impact the co-op community and the world. NCG is closely monitoring this situation and has consolidated information and links to important resources for our co-ops.
