Co-op staff may be feeling extra stressed because of uncertainty, overwork, changes in family routines and responsibilities, or having loved ones who are sick due to COVID-19. Keeping your team engaged during this past year has been challenging. As we proceed through the pandemic and eventually begin navigating through the aftermath, managers can use these tips to foster highly engaged teams and retain their staff.

One-on-one check-ins. The most important thing managers can do to engage workers is have one-on-one check-ins. Make sure your team members are feeling okay. Asking “how are you?” and really listening for the answer shows that you care about their situation and that you’re there for them as a support system. Acknowledging what people are going through helps them be more resilient, confident and optimistic.

Plan fun activities with your team. Incorporating fun activities into your day can cheer people up, give them a sense of belonging and increase engagement. Activities help create connections that give teammates a sense of well-being and make them feel more fulfilled at work.
