Food Allergens

Information related to labeling of food allergens on prepackaged foods.

Background

In January 2006, laws took effect regarding food labeling that require a listing of food allergens (listed by their common names) be included on prepackaged foods. This law is known as the Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA), Title II of Public Law 108-282. Essentially, per the FDA guidance papers regarding the law, wrapped or packaged self-service deli/bakery food items need to be in compliance with the law and list allergens. Full-service food items or food items made to order do not need to list allergens.
