Program Overview
On December 20, 2018, USDA announced final regulations for the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard. The mandatory compliance date is January 1, 2022. Because “bioengineered” and “BE” are the labeling terms mandated through these regulations, to reduce confusion we have also adopted this terminology to replace what was formerly referred to as “genetic engineering” or “GMO.”
Since 2011, NCG has been a vocal and consistent advocate for on-package written disclosure for all bioengineered foods. We are disappointed that the final regulations do not require this, and will continue to work within our industry to encourage the most consumer-friendly and transparent implementation of the regulations possible.
