Gluten-Free Labeling
In August 2014, federal guidelines regarding the labeling of “gluten-free” products went into effect. These guidelines were developed as part of the Food Allergy Labeling Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) mandating allergen labeling. Any products labeled “gluten-free” are now required to meet a set of specific criteria and, as a result, making “gluten-free” claims on house-made products now brings formal liability issues to your co-op. Products labeled “gluten-free” must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten and be made from identified non-gluten sources.
