Meat Nutrition Labeling

Information and links related to labeling of fresh meat.

Background
New USDA/FSIS regulations regarding meat nutritional labeling took effect March 1, 2012. There are essentially three rules to be aware of:

  1. All retailers must provide nutritional information for 40 specific cuts of meat and poultry at point of purchase.
  2. Companies (or retailers) that annually produce more than 100,000 pounds of any specific ground meat product will need to include nutritional information on that product’s packaging (for example, 80/20 ground beef is a product, 90/10 ground beef is a product, etc).
  3. Ground meat products that make a nutritional marketing statement will need to include language that states both lean AND fat content (for example, 80% lean/20% fat).
