Creating Inclusive Event Experiences at Your Co-op

Your co-op’s events are expressions of your co-op’s brand. They can be avenues to engage shoppers and offer opportunities for community members to participate in the co-op and the values it stands for. The experiences created should feel welcoming and inclusive for attendees. Here are a few areas to consider when planning an inclusive event at your co-op.

Pre-event

Event dates

It is essential to consider religious and cultural holidays, practices, and celebrations. Look into what is important at that time of year and in your community. Consider asking staff members or community members for input on dates.

Consider the Needs of Attendees

A meaningful way to help people feel welcome is by offering ensuring accessibility and accommodations such as interpreters, accessible spaces, nursing rooms and dietary considerations. Having a staff person available onsite to support a positive experience for attendees would be helpful too.

All-gender Restrooms

Offering all-gender restrooms is inclusive. Mentioning where they are located in communications is imperative and welcoming comments would be helpful as well.

Beverages

Some may refrain from drinking alcohol due to health, religious, sobriety or other reasons. Consider offering a variety of non-alcoholic options. You can elevate your non-alcoholic options by serving them in glassware.

Sensory-inclusive and Quiet Spaces

Many individuals have sensory-related needs. Be aware of sound levels and lighting choices during your event and consider offering low-key or quiet spaces away from crowds and noise. You can find more about the importance of these spaces here.
