This fall, Viroqua Food Co+op in Viroqua, Wis., decided to get creative in the way they celebrated eating local.
“We wanted to do an Eat Local Challenge that was engaging for all ages, and we wanted to have a little fun,” said Jen McCoy, Viroqua’s marketing and outreach manager.
The campaign included a local food celebration event, a trifold sign board, coloring sheets and an original Eat Local Challenge bingo game, designed by staff.
“We had a lot of ideas for how to eat local but didn’t want to overload our ideas with words,” McCoy said. “Our graphic designer started drawing images with playful characters that told the story and then created a poster. The bingo card came from there.”
The co-op’s goals with the campaign were to raise awareness of the many ways to eat local in the area, highlight the benefits of eating local, and bring in design elements from their new website.
The bingo game rules were simple: Cross off five icons in a row horizontally, vertically or diagonally and turn in the card for a chance to win one of the co-op’s new, branded Kleen Kanteens, along with a $10 gift card.
McCoy said they received great feedback on the game from both shoppers and staff. “We got 49 cards back, which is pretty good for our little town.”
