Oshkosh Food Co-op Promotes Locally Sourced Eggs

2022 was the deadliest year on record for avian influenza, in which more than 43 million laying hens died. Since last summer, egg costs have increased more than 50% compared to the prior year and ended the year at historical highs.

Many non-conventional egg producers remained isolated from the effects of avian influenza until November, when holiday demand drove consumers to purchase larger-than-expected volumes of cage-free and organic eggs. This shift in demand has affected all brands participating in NCG programs, causing intermittent out of stocks and cost increases.

Creativity and adaptability have proven to be essential in retaining customers and fulfilling shopper needs. Oshkosh Food Co-op in Wisconsin demonstrated this with a recent promotion on locally sourced eggs.

In response to the rise in prices and increase in demand, the co-op took to social media a few weeks ago, posting a message that read: “At your co-op right now, Free Range Grade A Large eggs are just $3.29/dozen.” This price was notable compared to the average wholesale price of $4.18 a dozen in the Midwest region. The promotion was a success — the story took off and even grabbed media attention.

Oshkosh focused on the local sourcing of their eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms in nearby Bonduel, Wis. “Strong local suppliers (and a strong local food economy) help insulate shoppers in our community from national price spikes when events like this occur,” the co-op said in their social media posts. “It’s one of the reasons your co-op is so committed to local sourcing. Together, we are building a more resilient local food economy. Every time you shop your co-op, that’s what you’re investing in.”

Recently, Oshkosh Food Co-op was joined by a local TV station at the store as the local supplier delivered eggs to the co-op. Read the story here.
