Program Overview
NCG is pleased to provide paid membership to the Food Industry Association (FMI) for all member co-ops. FMI provides leadership to food retailers and wholesalers in a variety of areas, including food and product safety, consumer research, government relations, and sustainability programs.
Membership in FMI entitles NCG co-ops to discounted rates on research reports; a variety of professional conferences and networking opportunities; an extensive food safety program that includes one-on-one guidance (available 24 hours a day in an emergency), training, rapid recall reports, and much more.

Food Safety
FMI’s food safety department is like an extension of your co-op. You can count on FMI for:

Asset Protection
- Annual Conference: FMI’s Asset Protection Conference is developed to meet the specific needs of food retail industry executives charged with protecting the organization’s assets: people, reputation and property
- DHS / FEMA: A collaborative partnership that allows for expedited access to critical information from Homeland Security and other government agencies for FMI members
Signature Events
- Future Connect: Addresses the coming talent gap, provides collaborative learning sessions designed along three tracks: Personal Skills, Management Skills, and Profit-Building Skills
- FMI 2014: Your biennial opportunity to see the food industry’s showcase of products and services and to engage with retailers and wholesalers from around the globe

FMI provides members with regulatory support on two fronts:
- Advocacy: FMI’s expert staff pursues changes to federal rules to minimize any negative impacts
- Compliance: Members receive customized materials to help understand new regulations

FMI advocates through a member-driven program focusing on the issues that matter most to grocers:
- Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)
- Food Safety

- “Last-In-First-Out” Accounting (LIFO)

- Paid Sick Leave / RESPECT Act
- Pension Reform
- FMI’s State Government Relations department, working in conjunction with state associations, is a valuable resource for learning about and responding to state and local policy initiatives in your area.
Industry Collaboration
- FMI Committees: Forums that provide opportunities to work with industry colleagues on specific issues and increase engagement in industry-wide efforts. FMI Committees cover all subject matter disciplines of the industry.
- Private Brands Initiative: A collaborative trading partner initiative that is focused on growth opportunities for FMI members to build their brands and engage with supplier partners.
- Supply Chain: A community and conference where FMI members can network and share best practices on the latest trends and challenges in transportation and logistics facing the retail supply chain.
Independent Operator Programs
- Independent Operator Advisory Board: Evaluates FMI activities and makes recommendations on programming and services that are uniquely suited to independent operators
- FMI Share Groups: Provide a confidential forum for the open exchange of ideas, strategies and problem solving among senior executives of Independent Operator FMI member companies
- Independent Operator Newsletter: Keeps you up to date on issues that matter most to independents

NCG members receive member access to all FMI programs at no cost. Annual dues have been paid on your behalf by NCG.
